EHS Students/Alumni Earn Madison Rotary Youth Awards

On May 13, the Rotary Club of Madison honored 44 Madison high school students who received certificates and cash awards to recognize their scholastic achievements and contributions to the Madison community. Among the recipients were some of recent Edgewood’s most recent alumni as well as current students:

For his role in the selection process, Aaron Grode ’15 was honored as a Community Service Award Judge and received $180.


Kevin Varghese Thomas ’15 earned a $1,300 Outstanding Senior Award for academic achievement, leadership and community service. William O’Brien ’15 received a $600 Senior Academic Achievement Award for top scholarship. Tony Rehm ’15 received a $500 award for Senior Academic Improvement while in high school.


In addition, current Edgewood sophomore Philip Fochios and junior Elizabeth Conybear earned Academic Improvement Awards, and sophomore Veronica Bwembya was chosen to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Conference.

Six EHS Alums at UW-Madison Earn Science Fellowships


Six alumni from EHS were awarded fellowships at the UW-Madison Chancellor’s Undergraduate Awards Ceremony on Monday, May 4, 2015.  

Five received Hilldale Undergraduate/Faculty Research Fellowships made possible by funds from the Hilldale Foundation and the Wisconsin State Legislature that provide for awards of $3,000 each to undergraduate students and $500-$1,000 to their faculty/staff advisors to work in collaboration on research projects. Considering the thousands of high schools UW-Madison draws from internationally, to have five recipients from Edgewood out of a total of 112 is remarkable! Below are each of the five, his or her major, and the title of the research project.

Patrick Barney ’12 – Microbiology
Generation of Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Photoreceptors and Applications in Transplantation Therapy

Patrick Carney ’12 – Genetics
(his faculty sponsor is Gregory D Kennedy, MD, PhD, father of one EHS graduate and a current EHS student) 
Dependency of Notch Signaling on AHR Activation in Human Colon Cancer

Connor Ford ’12 – Biomedical Engineering
Combined Actions of Etomidate and Midazolam on GABAA Receptor Kinetics

Kelsey Rayment ’12 – Biochemistry and Wildlife Ecology 
Intestinal Digestive Enzyme Modulation in Northern Bobwhite Quail (Colinus virginianus)
 
Caroline Zellmer ’12 – History of Science, Medicine & Technology and Microbiology 
Assessment of the Long Term Outcomes of Fecal Bacteriotherapy for Clostridium difficile Infection

A sixth Edgewood alumnus was one of 15 students to earn a Sophomore Research Fellowship, funded by UW System Undergraduate Research & Discovery Grant that provides $2,500 to each recipient and $500 to the faculty/staff advisor.
